I once had a Sunday School teacher tell us that if we ever got a divorce, he was going to be really mad. And then he handed us the book Sacred Marriage.
At this point, we were newlyweds and had only been married a few years. But even back then, our marriage was already struggling.
We read the book and came away with this idea that marriage was about being holy, not happy.
And honestly, that bought us a couple more years.
Not because our marriage was fixed. We just determined that some people had good marriages and some didn’t. And no matter what, we had to stay married. Even if we were miserable, because marriage was about being holy, not happy. Right?
Wrong.
Our marriages are supposed to be a reflection of our relationship with Christ.
I don’t know about you, but my relationship with God is peaceful, loving, joyful, and the most amazing relationship in my life. And yes, HAPPY!
Why shouldn’t our marriages be that way too?
You should enjoy being married. You should look forward to spending time together. You should actually like the person you’re doing life with.
And if that’s not where your marriage is right now, let’s work on that.
It wasn’t until almost 10 years later that we came across the marriage ministry of Joel & Kathy Davisson. They kept talking about couples in crisis getting their miracles and going on to have “outrageously happy marriages.”
Like, what?! Is that actually okay? Are we allowed to be THAT happily married?
Sure are!
And guess what? God receives all the glory and honor from it. I also believe we are so much more effective for His Kingdom when our marriages are healthy, happy, and thriving.
We have since joined their marriage ministry and have had the privilege of helping other couples. And now, we’ve created a companion workbook designed to help couples take these principles and actually apply them to their own marriages.
It can be worked through together as a couple or used in a marriage small group, with practical questions, conversations, and steps to help you start making real changes in your marriage.
So if your marriage is struggling, or you simply know it could be happier than it is right now, we’d love for you to check out the book/workbook set or reach out to us for help.
It would truly be our pleasure.
